My guess is that they are all rebuilds from AutoZone or someplace like that and made in China. As long as your getting them under warranty and don't mind changing them out every 3 months............
I stopped purchasing parts from Autozone a couple of years back. I got four bad power steering pumps out of the box on the same vehicle. Exhausted the supply from two stores. Wouldn't have been so bad if the pulley came on the pump. NO such luck. Had to use a puller each time.
Learning the hard way I guess..Contacted the head office of O'Rileys who in turn contacted local store. pulling starter tomorrow and we'll see what happens.. Thanks for the help..
Have you owned the vehicle for some time? I'm not that familiar with that particular vehicle's exhaust setup. Has it be modified. Had a friend who purchased a 96 explorer and couldn't keep a starter on it for any length of time. Since I had one I crawled under the vehicle to remove the bad one to take it apart to determine why there was a problem. For some reason the previous owner, or a repair person, had removed the heat shield from the block to deflect head away from the starter. Found one at the junk yard and the problem was solved. Make sure the shield is there if it had one and no modifications were made to the exhaust.
Ok just put the fourth starter in this year. when replacing starter before it started right up. Now just the click like solinoid not kicking in.. New ford starter in this time. He checked the other one when i took it in and said it was ok.
Did you change the starter relay/solenoid on the fender well? If so try bypassing the relay from the battery. Only do the bypass for a second or two as the gear will stay engaged into the flywheel until you disconnect the connection.
If you get the same click, then remove the starter from the vehicle, but leave the connections in place. Have someone engage the switch to see if the starter kicks out the gear and it turns. Are you sure your motor turns freely and does not have some damage to either the flywheel or other internal components making it difficult to rotate.
Found a bad wire that goes to the small terminal on solenoid. Not sure where that wire comes from, but will be changing it out.
