What would cause my truck to not move when pressing accelerator?

Asked by Eleni_em Oct 27, 2015 at 03:32 PM about the 1999 Ford F-150 XLT Extended Cab LB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I was driving home, backroads down a
gravel road while it was drizzeling, going
about 20mph. Went to give it the gas and it
revved but I was slowing down till finally I
came to a stop. Tried to accelerate and the
truck revved up but never moved. Dropped it
into first and it was the same. It easily
moves into different gears. Turn the truck
on and off and it runs fine, everything else
works but just won't move. Husband held
his foot on the accelerator for a few min
and still didn't budge just revved. Never
gave me any warning signs or sounds out of
the usual. Having someone come look at it
but have heard it could be anything from the
tranny to the cadalytic converter to maybe
just a fuse or wires from others. 99 F-150
XLT 4.6L. Any advise is appreciated!

what is the distance of your truck? if it has covered plenty of miles and has been driven hard then this is a sounds like a classic case of a malfunctioning torque converter or fluid coupling, this is in place of a clutch plate on a manual transmission automobile and only really works when you are stopped but still in drive, the energy has to go somewhere and it goes in the torque converter. so you really need a new torque converter or maybe a new transmission at worst

It has 111,000 miles on it. I'm also the second owner. It was well taken care of by an older man so I belive it still has most of its original parts. Just changed the original alternator on it about a month ago.

I guessed it was an auto, I do not know enough about torgue convertors to tell if it is that, but I would say so, the technician down your local auto shop should confirm what is wrong, allow around $1000 if it is.
