2002 Chevrolet cavalier will shift into drive,reverse, etc but wont move?

Car shifter is broken but can shift into reverse,drive, etc but transmission acts like it is not
engaging and car will not move.

Is the shifter a center console or steering console? The linkage may be lose or have a nut come off and it is in gear and you put it into another gear. Check that first.
