Yeah, I got the truck for nothing from a friend. I have reverse but no forward gears. So I figured if I have too replace the trani with a used I would be changing the filter anyway so maybe drop the pan and see if i get luck. Then i found that. Looks like its going to be a swap ahead of me. Thank you!

You could test the solenoids and sensors with pan off which may be bad and still get it too work.

The fluid was dark. I've smelled worse of a burn though. That fluids 20 years old. Any idea where to get the procedure for testing the solenoid while the pan is down

If you do not have a repair book , Not sure if a haynes has trans repairs or not but do know the dealers repair complimentary trans book does, otherwise youtube may have them or a website may have it too. I have a 98 f150 too, and do have the repair books for 1998 f150, its about 5 books, If there is nothing showing it the web I will look them up. It may take a while for me to get them typed in here tho. So if they are already on the net/web it would be faster to search for them. There is a code on the door jam drivers side for trans, look for it and post it, so I know which trans you have.

Too funny. I've been a tech all my life but have not done it full time for years. I didn't know any dealers repair complimentary book even existed, or where to find it. Lol. Aw lmao here. I'll look and see what I can find. If not I'll let you know.

They are supplements as procedures were upgraded later & there is a dealer trans book for each trans, I only have the one for my trans 4r70w. I did not locate trans book when I just looked, it may be in the truck or shop or loaned out and forgot about. The volume 2 has some of the info on all used that year.

That is a shipping assembly plug. Just throw it away as it is not needed.
