Check engine light in for months then go off for an hour then comes back on

Asked by FloridaFarmer Mar 15, 2019 at 05:32 PM about the 1998 Ford F-150 XLT Extended Cab SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My check engine light came on so I replaced
the O2 sensor and the gas cap. It went off for
a couple of weeks, now it's back on again.
The error code says it is the O2 sensor again.
I did just replace the fuel pump and I'm not
sure it sealed properly on the top of the tank.
Could that cause an O2 error? Also I should
add that when I fill up, I smell gas inside the
truck for the first hour or so.

If you use the 87 octane gas all the time start using the 89 or higher octane gas had same problem check engine light comes on saying 02 sensor replaced one day later light comes back on saying 02 sensor started using the 93 octane gas to make a long story short after 10 tank fills and light coming on and going off 4 times light is now out and stays out.
