is the ford 1998 4.2 v6 8th digit 2 engine interchangable with any other engine?

modern fuel injected engine use electronics to run and to swap any engine would mean replacing all the electrikery, I would only replace engines like for like and then re prgrame the ECU to suit it, also my advise to you is to go down to your local shop and a qualified technician should be able to diagnose the malfunctioning engine

Your engine is 18 years old. A newer engine could possibly bolt up just fine to your transmission, but that is probably it. Without the proper electronics of the newer engine it would never start, probably, and your old transmission would probably not shift.
