Truck dies after start up

Asked by Ross Nov 29, 2018 at 10:21 AM about the 1994 Ford F-150 S SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have an electrical issue with my truck. When I'm
driving and turn the headlights on it dies. Also
when I try to use the blinkers it will do the same.
I've had to turn the hazards to get it to keep
running and the hazards don't work. Bulbs are new
all around. (Stock bulbs). This morning it would
start and die immediately and I had to fiddle with
the ignition to get it to keep running until I got
about 2 miles down the road. I'm at a loss as to
which thing to replace.

I would start by having the battery tested. I'm surprised it has enough power to crank the starter, but not enough to keep running. I say "battery problem" because the slightest electrical load kills the ignition...apparently. Next, have the alternator tested. You can do a voltage test while engine is running. Looking for about 14 volts from the alternator...at the battery terminals.
