There is generally a switch, I forget what it is called right now, which will cause the A/C to shut off when driving at certain speeds to facilitate passing at highway speeds. It sounds more like perhaps your A/C clutch is not working. Have this checked out by a mechanic, I know there is a switch in the line somewhere that relates to this, but the exact name escapes me.
