What's the 1st thing to check when the Check Engine message come pn

The car was brought used.  I have put around 400
miles on it. The check Engine message came on a
few days after putting on those miles

Take your car to your local auto parts store and ask them to read the trouble codes. Write them down and post them here.

It can't hurt to check your gas cap to see if it is loose.
