Shifter issues

Asked by Destry Oct 26, 2017 at 11:29 AM about the 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier LS Sedan FWD

I was taking kid to daycare. I pulled into the spot
and went to shift if into park. It didn't feel like it
went in so I took foot off the brake and car started
to roll backwards. I put the e-brake on then I tried
to restart car and it won't let me. I know there is the
safety issue where your car won't start unless it's
in park or nutrual. So I pulled the center console
out to look at shift column but the linkage is
attached to the shift but it feels really loose like it's
still not going in. Where else should I look.

The neutral safety switch is probably located on the transmission where the linkage is attached to the transmission, check the linkage to make sure it's attached properly. Could also be a broken shifter cable

I found the linkage that was attached to the transmission. It had fallen off and the sensor wasn't fully connected. But i temporarily fixed the issue. So I can drive it to get the part.

The purpose of the neutral safety switch is to keep the car from starting in gear and lurching forward. As long as you are aware it's disabled and start the car accordingly, you can still drive it in the meantime.
