Faulty gas gauge

Asked by egreen0525 Sep 03, 2016 at 01:15 PM about the 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer LS RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The section on the dash that tells the gas level (E
to F) is broken. I have to guess when it comes to
knowing if I need gas or how full the tank is. Can
you tell me what may have caused this to happen?
Is this a dealer issue or can I have someone else
fix it? I appreciate any help you can give.

I would believe that it is the sending unit, in the fuel tank, that is bad. I have a friend with one and he had the same issue, around 60k miles. It is a job that really requires the aid of a helper. The part should not be more than $100, including shipping. GMPartsDirect has a fair price on OE parts. Considering its location, I would go with the premium part. You don't want to do this job again, six months down the road. If you have someone do the job for you, be sure to Google the labor hours and price for the job in your zip code.
