How can i tell if the waterpump is bad or the thermostat is not opening?

Car runs hot but not over 200degrees.

2200  engine with a (4) in serial #

Most all vehicles have a 175-195 degree thermostat. So if it's not going over 200 you're fine. If your water pump was bad you would either have a anti-freeze leak out of it or you engine would have overheated by now. So if that hasn't happened the pump is probably ok too
