When I put the air conditioning on a loud grinding noise occurs?

On an older car I would guess the compressor has failed or maybe the clutch is slipping. There's a bearing in there but that would grind all the time. Okay, with motor off, turn the Center hub of the compressor to see what is feels like. It should turn easily and smoothly by hand. So don't click on the A/C until it's checked out. Remember the A/C comes on with the Defrost function. That's a no-no too.
