I have a 1996 Tacoma lx. The fuel gauge only goes up to just below the half a tank mark when I fill it up.would it work if I was to Manually move the needle to the full mark?

Likely cause is the float in the tank is clogged with gunk, preventing it from functioning correctly. It could be the gage is broken but not as likely as a fuel tank sending unit. Another, more remote, possibility is the electrical connections at the tank or gage are corroded or loose.
