Car battery not charging

Asked by GuruXNNCN Nov 03, 2018 at 08:53 AM about the 2005 Chevrolet Impala LS FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My battery will not charge. Had 3 alternators checked at
autozone and all 3 tested to be good. I have 5 batteries that
also tested good. Also replaced my starter, checked all
fuses and ground wires and cleaned them. I put volt meter
red wire on positive side of battery and touched alt positive
with other lead and volts remain same as battery. Then put
black lead on negative part of alt and still reads the same...
I'm totally lost and tried everything it seems and about to
give up on my baby.. When I drive it, i can go 15-20 minutes
before it dies.. Battery light always is on soon as I start it.
When it starts to die the speed odometer and everything on
dash stops working, trans slips ect... Well last night it died
within 1000 feet all the way until I couldnt go 50 feet and
had to walk home at 2am!! When I was working on it i
noticed my front wheel hub sensor wires were ripped apart
and just dangling there.. Could that be the reason for
battery not charging?

I don't know what testing you have done? Make sure battery has a full charge and connections all good. Note the diagram. The generator bat terminal is hot all the time, even with key off. Use a test light to check for voltage. If no voltage, problem with wiring circuit or fusible link. In the diagram, you can see the fuse, check that. Your charging system is computer controlled.

I'm having the same problem. I've ordered a new pcm online since that is about the only thing left to replace. I believe the computer isn't telling the alternator to turn on. The pcm is ven specific so goong to a junkyard is not a option. They sell them online preprogrammed to vin numbers from a online retailer.
