I've never heard of a message light that refers to engine failure. So I'm going to guess you mean a flashing Check Engine Light. That came on because you likely have a problem with the engine's emissions, firing, or oil pressure. YOU DON'T DRIVE WITHTHAT LIGHT ON. I's most likely that it's an engine misfire that's sending raw unburned fuel into the exhaust and you're at risk of destroying the catalytic converter...... I don't understand why you're askimng this question online and not at a mechanic NOW.
Lights don't come on for no reason. Visit your local auto parts store and have them scan the computer for trouble codes. When you get the codes post them here and we can help further. If the light is flashing you shouldn't be driving the vehicle because of what Ed said. Catalytic converters aren't cheap!! Jim
