P0420 is a catalyst inefficiency code, usually that means the catalyst is failing but you could also have something happening with fuel trim. Yes it need to got to your favorite shop and get checked. Driving short distances should be fine but don't take a trip with it.

Emissions problems in cars cause the highest alerts. The car's trying to get your attention to get it to a mechanic... NOW. Your problem is common. Just have a mechanic find the problem which is the need for a catalytic converter replacement, and get it done. You're nearing ten years, and that's about the time converters go out, so there's nothing unusual here..... I have no idea what a safe driver magnet is, but I wouldn't recommend placing a magnet near any car electronics.
