I've got two new warning lights, so what do I do now?

Just now my 2005 Toyota Highlander displayed the VSC and check engine
lights. I bought it used with 235,450 miles on it, thinking it would be a
dependable car. Now what do I do? I don't want to drive it and perhaps
make it worse, it already has a burnt oil smell and has acceleration
problems. I had the OBD machine on it, and the code came back in letters,
not numbers. I even had the clerk at Napa try it, same results. Now what?

Those two lights on means there is a fault code. Probably the acceleration issue. You need to get the codes in numbers. Have a dealer or local garage look at it. A burnt oil smell is probably the valve covers gaskets or oil pan gasket. Those will leak over time, especially at 235K if they are original. FYI: Toyota are dependable vehicles, but any vehicle at 235K, I would not consider dependable.

The vsc light just means the stability controls are off....there should be a button either by the shifter or on dash near steering wheel to turn it back on....must be stopped and hold button down for a few seconds. If it shuts traction control off too that's ok just repeat

Note vsc is made to apply the brakes in up to 3 tires to help control the car in low traction situations
