Oil consumption

Asked by Stuart May 29, 2008 at 10:31 AM about the 2002 Toyota ECHO 4 Dr STD Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2002 Toyota Echo I4 with 170 000kms on it.  I need to add about a quart of oil every 600-700kms.  This feels really fast to me and others I've talked to, but the Toyota Dealer I go to says its nothing to be concerned with, and "short of pulling the engine apart" there's no way to know.

Any thoughts from people in the know?

Sounds excessive like perhaps there is some piston ring blowby, or valve stem seal leakage. Do a compression test on the engine to see if rings are shot.
