What does it mean when my maintenance and check engine lights are both on?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

About three weeks ago my maintenance required light began to flash five times every time I started my car.  I looked that up and it said it had to do with the oil.  I had gotten an oil change 1,000 miles previous, so I drove on it thinking maybe they just didn't reset it.  I wound up driving like that for a few weeks, then decided to get an oil change anyways, and now the light is staying on.  Yesterday I heard a loud squealing noise for a moment, two hours later the check engine light comes on as well.  I am not sure if the two are related.  I have about 99,000 miles on it so I am a bit concerned.
