My water reservoir needs to be filled often and I
don't detect a leak from beneath the car

Try some stop leak like Alumaseal. If there is a tiny leak it may stop it. Otherwise you could pressurize the system. Hopefully it is not a bad head gasket. Do you have a lot of white smoke coming from the exhaust?
