Toyota Corolla engine switching off and clunking

Asked by skysimone Aug 28, 2016 at 07:16 PM about the 1997 Toyota Corolla Base

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Yesterday I bought a 1997 Toyota Corolla
The guy selling it works on cars and sells them and
said the a/c compressor was the only issue and that
the engine was fantastic and I should get 100k
miles out of it

It's
Only on 144k miles

When we test drove it it sounded great and we had
no problems. We had a half hour drive home and it
was fine too. Last night my husband took it to get
vacuumed inside and it began puttering and the
engine went off once

Today I tried to go to the store and when reversing
out of my car bay at my apartments the engine
went off 4 times

Has anyone heard of this or have any
suggestions???
I can't afford $4,000 a year to lease a car (which
wouldn't belong to me anyway) or the same a
mount to buy one

That's why I got an older make
I can't work without a car please help
I spent my last $1000 on this car
