Downshift or holding back when descending on a slope

It seems to happen only on a particular decent - as I am coming down the
slope my car seems to shift down or hold back (makes a different noise too
loud hum) coming down the cut.  I have driven it through the mountains and
passes, some steeper and longer than this particular stretch of highway and
it doesn't seem to do it. Also can't seem to find the sweet spot when doing
40k... 4cyl automatic transmission -141000k (tranny serviced at 100000k),
tries to find a gear to stick to.

Check the owners manual, some of these had a decent mode in the programming that would use engine braking on certain declines by dropping down one gear, this can be irritating but doesn’t mean you have any problems. If really concerned then have a transmission shop check it over.

Any warning lights on or flashing when the engine is running? Automatic down shifting may be a normal trans computer function. Suggest you check the Owners Manual for info. Do you notice that stepping lightly on the break pedal initiates this down shift?

Thank you for your reply. Luckily there are no flashing or warning lights. It is just interesting it always happens on this particular stretch/grade - I will note if I touch the brakes next time and it kicks in. I will seek out an owners manual as another person mentioned "descent" mode? Appreciate your answer and time!
