What would cause new thermostat to not open?

Asked by bensmith10 Mar 28, 2014 at 01:06 PM about the 2001 Toyota Camry LE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Engine light on. Test list thermostat as 1st probable cause. Replaced but new thermostat will not open. Replaced with 2nd new thermostat - thermostat will not open. Car has fairly new radiator. It is getting water to the water pump. Is there something else that could be causing the thermostat not to open?

Are you purchasing an over rated thermostat for your car? Are you putting in a 225 degree thermostat instead of a 180 degree? How are you determining that it's not opening? Is your engine over heating or running too cool? What tests have you done so far?
