My newly purchased 2001 toyota camry ce has the check engine light on. What does this mean? Car has slightly less than 20,000 miles and I've had it less than a week.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I bought a 2001 camry ce less than a week ago.  The very 1st day, the check engine light came on.  I checked the gas cap and the oil, both are fine.  Car has slightly les than 120,000 miles on it.  I bought it from a private dealer.

It could be a few things. Don't panic it could be something very simple. If I were you and I just bought a car and the engine light came on I would take it to dealer to have it checked right away. When you say private dealer do you mean someone selling their own personal car or a mom and pop dealership (not a Toyota dealership)? Does your state have lemon laws?
