As far as consumer complaints go, there aren't that many. I would say that the 2000 is a pretty safe bet. It seems that after 2000, the complaints go way up for the newer models. There have been quite a few complaints of oil consumption for the new models. I have always owned pre 2000 Camrys. By far the best year I think is the 1995 Camry 4 cylinder. I had one with over 250k and that was all east coast mileage with road salt and winters to boot. Very little issues with the car. Nothing major. Just the typical exhaust, starter replacements. Everything else was routine replacements. Timing belt, water pump, was done at expected intervals. I just quit driving my 99 Camry as well. It only has 130k on it, but it has a lot of nickle and dime issues. Still runs and drives great. Needs O2 sensor, exhaust, E-brake shoes, rear support bracket, struts, plugs, possible EVAP solenoid. Instead of paying $2k in new parts, I said screw it and bought a 2002 Tundra. But over all, I would say buy a 2000 or below for the best luck.
