random stalling when coming to a stop

Asked by lbfly2000 Mar 01, 2016 at 10:40 AM about the 2000 Toyota Camry LE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2000 Camry, this happens periodically. When I am coming to a stop it will start running really rough, giving it gas to try to keep it running if in neutral doesn't help. Once I take off and keep giving it gas reving it up  will keep it from killing unless I have to stop right away again then it will kill. It will start right up and almost always runs just fine. I have cleaned the throttle body, replaced the PCV valve, and have been using Lucas fuel injection cleaner every month, tried Techron, None of this is helping. Used to happen once every 2-3 months, now 3 times the past month. There's 151K on the engine. Thanks for any ideas.

Is the Check Engine Light ON when the engine is running? Sounds like an IAC problem. Often....when you clean a throttle body....you create more problems than you solve. Some of the debris from the TB migrates into the Idle Air Control Valve.

No, I wish it was then I could at least have the codes read. Well that's probably the next thing to try. Thank you.

If there are NO CODES stored in the computer...I would be inclined to re-inspect the throttle body ....and....carefully remove the IAC motor for inspection. If It's loaded with a gooey black deposit...that's most likely your problem. Also...the IAC passages should be cleaned. A VACUUM LEAK can also be a factor. That's a different diagnostic procedure. Then of course....there is another component which can cause the stalling problem you describe. EGR Valve. Of course...another diagnostic procedure.

Thank you, I have been thinking the EGR valve also. Since I am going to be checking things throttle body, will check IAC.

I drive a 2000 6-cylinder Camry with 140,000 miles. I have had this exact problem for years & also periodically, but not concurrently have had code for small vacuum leak. I have never been able to demonstrate this problem to anyone else because it has only happened 20 times in 18 years. Ideas?
