my 1994 Camry won't reverse

my 1994 Toyota Camry was stolen for a month by
a family member . when I got it back I noticed the
car would not reverse it's been over a year car run
still like a pussy cat no problems but still no
reverse I was told maybe the reverse gear is
unplugged.  is there something like that I should
look at

I have heard that in older cars the reverse frictions can warp or wear away and cause reversing to not work.
