Question type: Maintenance & Repair

1992 Toyota Camry XLE
My last issue has changed....the car
runs and stays running without a
problem now but, it now
randomly(more times than not) will not
down shift all the way and the over
drive off light will start flashing as
soon as I slow down and it doesn't
downshift or it will come on as soon as
I put it in drive after starting it. It will
continue to flash at the slow steady
pace until I turn the car off. Any
suggestions on where to begin to fix
this issue? It's happening almost every
time I slow down the first time in
drive...It's gone from randomly (a hand
full of times a month) to every time I go
anywhere. Do I just need to replace the
transmission?

I would be inclined to check the Transmission Fluid first. Is the fluid at the proper level? What does it smell like? A burning odor? What color is it? Next step is Flashing Trouble Codes. Your Trans is likely controlled be a Computer. The Computer turns on/off electrical solenoids inside the trans....thus....controlling the shifting of gears in same. Replacing the Trans may cost more than this vehicle is worth$$$$. Suggest you consider a Diagnosis from a reputable Transmission repair shop. Get back to us with updates.
