Having trouble getting the crankshaft bolt off so I can change the timing belt.  Should I be turning the

Left to loosen. They are high torque so spray it with penetrating oil to reduce the chance of snapping the head off.

You can brace your socket wrench against something and then briefly crank the engine with the starter. The bolt will be loose. I did it on my 1996 Camry LE 2200 cc 5S-FE engine. The engine will be trying to turn the wrench clockwise.
