Loud blowing sound when I accelerate.

Asked by cantmiss Apr 22, 2017 at 11:33 AM about the 1991 Toyota Camry LE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2.0 91 toyota camry.  I started the car and heard a loud blowing
noise.  The more gas I gave it in park the louder it got.  If I let up on the gas
it went away.  I put it in drive and it would not accelerate very well.  I drove
like this for about 10 miles, then I started to smell overheating.  Another 5
miles or so and the temp gauge started spiking and the engine started
steaming.  I pulled over and got the car back home.  After it cooled down I
put water in it and saw a crack in the top of the radiator.  I have never had
overheating problems.  I am pretty sure that the blowing noise is either
vacuum or exhaust leak.  What I am not sure about is how this could have
caused the crack in the radiator or if it was just two problems at once.  Any
help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you!

It definitely sounds like the catalytic converter is plugged up in the exhaust system. You will need to get the cat. replaced, and now take care of your coolant leaks.

Do you think that is what caused it to overheat and crack the radiator, or is this two separate problems? Thank you for responding!

It could have caused the engine to overheat. But now you need the radiator fixed so might as well put a new thermostat in. Also there is a kit you can get from the parts store for checking to see if there are any exhaust gasses in the coolant, which would indicate a blown head gasket. Than may be worth your wild to do. Chances are if there were no problems before with overheating, you should be fine.
