Abs and brake light on

Abs light came on then week later brake light
came on they stay on this is my only car and
am afraid to drive it with my kids any ideas I
can check or walk me through how to check I
can’t afford a mechanic

do the brakes feel normal when applied? is there enough pad on the brakes(% life left)? a sensor could be out. also , check the brake fluid and fill proper fluid type to mark on the container.
