A lot of people like to hang covers from the top of car seats and that can add to comfort without sacrificing any safety..... Raise the headrest and you'll see a dome under each shaft. One dome has a hole in the side and that's the spring-loaded switch that locks the headrest in place. Just push the button to release the shaft and raise the headrest up & off. If you also want to remove the plastic domes, just pry them off. You may now add a cover and replacing the dome gives a cleaner look.
