had to hit the breaks hard last night, then the next time i needed to slow, my breaks were soft whats wrong?

Have you ever had service to replace the brake fluid? Get that done and have the service tech check for leaks in master cylinder and wheel cylinders. Do you have any warning lights regarding brakes? I had a similar problem with a GM car having soft pedal and replacing fluid would firm up the brake pedal.
