Engine replacement optinos

Asked by JonnieJ Sep 27, 2016 at 10:45 PM about the 2005 Subaru Outback 2.5 XT Limited Wagon

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

I have a 2005 Subaru outback 2.5. Engine oil ran dry and blew the engine.
What are my options for engine replacement?  I see alot of JDM engines on
ebay. Looking for advice on compatibility.  I won't be doing the swap myself,
but need to source a good reasonably priced replacement.

mmm... I'd might check out the outback/legacy forums as far as the JDM engines go (ebay/craigslist). You can check http://opposedforces.com/parts/ . . . for your 05 code and see what range was allowable during that time. I'm more familiar with foresters but I hope this makes for a good start. You might also post this to an outback forum just to see if there's other things you need to be aware of while you have everything apart. Best regards,

Think hard about whether you really want the turbo again. A re-gasketed 2.5i from 2006-2007 would be more robust and operate with a simpler emissions system. Would require a matching ECM of course.
