EJ25 Legacy MT motor replacement

I have a 2005 Subaru Legacy flat 4 EJ25 with a blown head gasket.  The heads have been off once already and I am looking for a used EJ25.  My existing motor is California emissions.  Does it matter if I pick up a Federal emissions motor?

If the smog check guy notices that the engine is not California emissions you will have a problem. If you can swap over all the CA smog gear you will probably be OK.
