Overheats after 8 miles

Asked by Psmike Nov 28, 2018 at 09:56 PM about the 1998 Subaru Legacy GT Wagon AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I can only go 8 miles before the needle pegs
hot. On occasion it will go back down. It
always over heats. I have replaced the
radiator and thermostat and radiator cap.
Both fans work. Passed compression
check.Seven mechanics have looked at it
and can't explain what it is. Claims need new
engine for 2k. Thanks

Can you gauge how good the coolant flow is? Might be a bad water pump. Has the system been pressure tested? How is the engine coolant temp sensor, is it turning the fan on when it should be? How did you confirm both fans work? It's one thing to see them work when the AC is switched on, which tells you the fans are good, but you need to see them switch on due to the coolant temp as well.
