Strong gas smell from exhaust

There is a strong smell of gas coming from the
exhaust of mt 06 chevy cobalt and the check
engine light is on and flashing. Can you please tell
me why it is burning fuel so bad.

Do not drive this with CEL flashing. You will ruin your catalytic converter. Raw fuel is getting down to your converter. Get codes and go from there.

One or more of your cylinders are not firing dumping unburned/raw fuel into your exhaust.
