What componets would make my 96 outback go into limp mode?

it is an auto I would assume as I don't know of any limp mode features on the manuals, the time my 98 forester auto went into limp mode it was a crushed shift solenoid, but it could be a few things, are you having tranny probs or engine probs lately?
