theres a shift lock solenoid in the center console. sometimes if you spill soda it sticks, and sometimes the solenoid fails completly, also, if your brake fuse is blown or brake light switch is inop, is can cause these problems. good luck

My 96 Legacy Wagon lever stuck in park, Key doesn't activate "starter". Once when I jiggled it starter functioned and everything was fine...until I shut it off...then it froze up again. ???

There is also your brake switch that allows the car to shift when the brake pedal is depressed. Possible that is going out but isn't all the way toast.
