I'm guessing it could be many things. Could be spark related / plugs / wires / coil / etc. Could be sensor related / fuel filter / or it could be something else. You might try asking on www.subaruforester.org as there are a ton of helpful folks there. I hope you find your answer quickly.

Could also be old trans fluid and shrunken trans o-rings. Drain and fill usually nets 4qts, replace with 4qts-but try TransX for part of the replacing total 4qts. What color is the trans fluid?

I have a JDM 1999 Subaru Forester turbo Automatic. Looked all over web for fix for “power” light on dash as well as check engine light on. Power light / option is not available in all countries/ regions. It allows transmission to shift differently for better performance. I had power light on as well as check engine light on. Very rough idle at cold start would die . Would take multiple starts as well as gas to keep it from dying. After awhile engine would warm up ok. Idle was ok. If I hit gas pedal while in park engine rpm was smooth and increase. Once I put it into gear at slow speeds under 40km/ hr was ok but if I hit gas engine would stumble as well as back fire. Sometimes would not shift to higher gear. Same situation when I am at stop sign or light and try to get into traffic. Stumble, hesitation and backfire. Finally fixed my issue. I tried to clean Mass Airfow Sensor ( with proper MAS cleaner) twice, no go. I tried to clean IACV ( idle air control valve), no go. I tried using trick with spark plug fouler between bung and O2 sensor, no go. I tried cleaning the ground connection on transmission and also on car frame, no go. Finally got my new Mass Airflow Sensor from RockAuto. Com today. Installed it in 10 minutes and things were back to normal!!!!! I looked at the old MAS closely. The “wire” was still good but the terminals were getting corrosion!! I leave this parked in front of house all year round. Probably only put less than 200 km per year on it. I have other vehicles to drive. So my suggestion is to try and clean terminals if possible before getting a new MAS. They are normally not cheap but I scored one at RockAuto for $36. Very happy with results … fingers crossed.
