Was the smoke coming out from under the hood, or from the exhaust in the rear of the vehicle?

If your engine controller senses a serious problem, it will go into "limp home mode" and you won't be able to drive over 30 mph. I would recommend getting the vehicle towed to a shop to prevent further damage.
