Asked by GuruZSN55 Nov 03, 2017 at 08:54 PM about the 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix Base

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix, I was
driving the other day and tried to turn on
the heat and I got cold air.. then I tried
again and I got heat, the heat was fine and
then when I pull up to th house it goes cold
again.. a week later I am not having
problems with my car overheating mostly
while idling only... I am wondering if this is
the thermostat? Radiator? Any ideas?

First and foremost make sure you have enough good coolant in radiator and reservoir to operate vehicle and have all the air bled out of system. That will either cure it or bring us to troubleshooting time. Learning events for me have been if system doesn't build enough pressure(the lever up on some radiator caps can slow down a small leak because isn't as pressing). A stuck or missing thermostat(similar reactions as lever up, totally different reasons). So does the system pressurize? Top, bottom, neither or both hoses having pressure all tell their own story. You might be entering a Dex sludge nightmare which can happen when air is introduced to Cooling system hose, tap water or af not Dex cool mixed with Dex cool antifreeze, certain stop leaks, and not flushing system when due. Consider flush and fill, not drain and refill (your option in methods) and proper universal af to refill, get away from Dex cool if possible. I use peak universal because it is safe to mix other antifreezes for my vehicle and (Big Reason) the ingredient denatonium benzoate (bittering agent so af won't be sweet for humans or animals consumption). If you suspect a leak a piece of cardboard under parked car can show you where and help deter animal consumption. I hope this helps somehow because I've strayedway off of topic. Anyway, air in system or correct- amount, flow, pressure- most likely causes of fluctuating temp and warmer air with raised rpms. Thank you
