I'm about to buy a 04 grand prix. It's the best in my price range of 1400$ but the owner said that they were using a toggle switch to jump the relays to turn it on and off with the switch. I work on some things but i'm no mechanic and i have no idea what to think on this one. I do know that running the fan manually uses a lot of power and puts strain on the alternator and battery. If i was to buy the vehicle i will want to fix the problem and get a new battery. what could be the causes of the problem for the fan not to run properly or run at all? and would this be a wise choice?

A bad fan relay, radiator temperature sensor, or a bad engine temperature sending unit could all be possibilities. Running the fan manually will not kill your battery unless the engine is shut off. Just running it on battery power alone will eventually kill the battery. Your radiator temp sensor is probably what's giving it all the problems........

None really, relays are just plug ins, radiator temp sensor is usually just a screw in, engine temp sensor is usually and electrical plug of some sort. Just google each part and look at it's picture. If you can't find it, just type part location into search bar and a pic should come up. For example type in "2004 grand prix radiator temp sensor location". A diagram should pop up with a pic of some sort. Or sometimes you can enter the same thing into youtube and a do it yourself video will pop up.
