2002 Pontiac Grand Prix SE issues

Asked by JensPrix Apr 25, 2018 at 02:24 PM about the 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix SE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My son bought a used 2002 Pontiac grand prix.
The cruise DOES work,  but it doesn't light up on
the gauge panel.
I took it yesterday to see why the service engine
light was on. Random misfire, something about a
key.... he cleared the codes out and when I went to
leave the car wouldn't crank. Did have a little issue
worth it cranking prior.  But thought that was due
to fuel regulator.  Anyways, guy hooked a charger
thing to the battery, still wouldn't start. I believe he
tapped the starter and it barely cranked. Got a
battery tester, battery tested weak.  Put new
battery that tested good.  Tried to start it,  and
wouldn't.  My dad tapped the starter and it cranked
up.  The lights pin the panel would come on,  but
no cranking or anything.

Could be the starter, but before you start spending money on parts that it may or may not need carefully go over the wiring. Make sure all connections are clean and tight. There are several grounds on modern cars. Make sure they are all clean and tight. Have a look in the fuse boxes, yes there are more than one, and make sure fuses are good and no major corrosion is evident. That's all stuff that just takes time, but is free if you're able to do it yourself.

Got a new starter. It cranks and runs. Just a little sputter. Thinking that's the plugs and wires needing to be changed. The cruiser control DOES work, but the light does not light up when it's engaged.
