My 2002 Grand Prix 3.1 engine, automatic trans, when I start the engine it won't go into gear when I press the brake, squeeze the shifter it won't move and hear a clicking sound

There is an interlock switch that prevents you from putting the car in gear without depressing the brake. I don't know where it is on your car, but that switch is either bad or it has come loose and no longer receives the input from the brake pedal.
