ABS & TRAC OFF LIGHT

Asked by Renea02GP Apr 10, 2018 at 11:26 AM about the 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix GT

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My ABS & TRAC OFF Lights are on. I’ve gotten new wheel
bearings, tire rod ends, new tires & a front alignment and
they are still on. Not to mention that my car shakes badly
when I’m pressing the gas when it reaches 40mph. It will
level out once I come off the gas. Somebody help me
cause this is costing me A LOT of dollars!!

Sounds like front CV joints in the axles are worn out. If so the fix is replacement of front axles. Could also be badly worn out spark plugs causing misfires under acceleration. Or could be both. The plugs are cheap and easy... sort of. ( Unbolt the engine mount and roll the engine forward to get at the back ones.) Axles are more expensive and may require a shop. Good news is they can vibrate like that for years. If you can't afford to fix them right away, or ever, it is highly unlikely they will fail completely, although I did have that happen once years ago. If its not in the budget, or the car is nearly worn out anyway, just drive it gently and mile it out without spending any more than necessary on it.
