In early 2000's Pontiac's the sensors on the steering column are electronic rather than mechanical. You either have a corroded/loose battery cable or the battery itself is dead. This is the most common cause. If charging the battery/ checking the cables doesn't help, it may be that the cylinder that the key spins in has worn out. Those are fairly easy to replace and the part is not expensive. If that doesn't help it will probably need a professional diagnostic at a repair shop.
