I replaced the crankshaft position sensor on my 1999 pontiac grand prix

Replacing the crank sensor won't affect the base timing of the engine. However, most crank sensors have to be spaced correctly. If the bolt hole for the sensor is slotted, or elongated, this will tell you that the crank sensor needs to be adjusted to the correct position

Get a timing light from the auto parts store. It looks like a futuristic hair dryer. Follow directions and you will see your timing.
