1999 Pontiac grand prix. Why is the key getting stuck in ignition and keeps blowing ignition fuse ( the big orange 40 )

Asked by Bob Aug 22, 2015 at 01:46 PM about the 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix 2 Dr GT Coupe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I replaced the ignition switch to see if it will
start the car but is keeps blowing the fuse.
Also the key won't come out unless I take
the whole ignition switch. It does have
factory security. Everything else works but
won't start. Not sound from starter or
engine.

Hope you didn't trash the old one because the anti-theft code is on the key. Get your old key and hold it close to the new key .. if the car starts you can copy the code to the new key

They had a recall on the ignition switches - you may want to see if yours is on that list. http://www.gmignitionupdate.com/vehicles/grand_prix.html

my 1999 grandprix gt will not turn all the way to off position once it is started to shut off the engine unless i press a buttom under the steering wheel

This is most likely the wiring harness in the console for the shifter. Hope that helps! Jim
